Kolkata Sight Seeing
Kolkata, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. It is
located in eastern India on the east bank of the River Hooghly. When
referred to as Calcutta, it usually includes the suburbs, and thus its
population exceeds 15 million, making it India's third-largest
metropolitan area and urban agglomeration as well as the world's 8th
largest agglomeration. The Ganges (called the
Hooghly in Kolkata) is still the inspiration, as it was to Job Charnok,
East India Company agent, who reached the shores in August 1690, after
which the city started growing. Kolkata, after London, was the British
Empire’s second city. Kolkata, on-the-Hooghly, retains the aura of days
long gone, weaving the past and the present, the intense and the
funloving into a charming fabric. Home to four Nobel laureates – Ronald
Ross, Rabindranath Tagore, Mother Teresa and Amartya Sen, Kolkata is the
nerve centre of intellect and human values, where many modern movements
began in art, cinema and theatre, science and industry. India’s quest
for freedom began here. Kolkata is the gateway to Eastern India. A city
with a rich heritage, bustling streets and bewildering variety of
facets. Most well-known tourist attractions are listed below:

St. Paul's Cathedral, Kolkata, India, stands on the "island of attractions" in Kolkata - beside Victoria Memorial, Nandan - Rabindra Sadan theatre complex, and the Birla Planetarium. The building was initiated by Bishop Daniel Wilson in 1839 and was completed in 1847,[1] in Gothic Revival style with stained glass windows and two frescoes in Florentine Renaissance style. A military engineer, Major William Nairn Forbes, designed the cathedral with the assistance of C.K. Robinson, modelling the tower and spire upon the Norwich Cathedral. The tower was rebuilt along the lines of Bell Harry Tower in Canterbury Cathedral following the 1934 Calcutta earthquake. |

Princep Ghat is one of Kolkata's oldest recreation spot even though it has lost much of its charm. Yet, it is still a marvelous place where tourists can spend hours together sitting on the benches and watching the uncluttered Kolkata life pass by gently. On the distant horizon, the magnificent Howrah Bridge and the the awesome Vidyasagar Setu makes for a kaleidoscopic vignette. |

Kolkata tram has entered into its 3rd century, yet it has been able to maintain its much touted hype, sheer & still attracts people to have a smooth silk glide on it's carriages. Tramcars evoke poetry which often remains incomprehensible in words. Really indeed, Tram lends Kolkata an old world charm and add to the romantic element to the city. This slow moving ,electrical reptile in narrow and crowded streets completes the ultimate attraction of the city .Having glided down the rails as a historian witness. Tram has itself been turned into an immemorial heritage for which the whole Kolkatans will be proud of. |

Shaheed Minar, formerly known as the Ochterlony Monument, was erected to commemorate Major-general David Ochterlony, commander of the British East India Company's main force in the Gurkha War of 1816. On the northern fringe of the vast park known as the Maidan, adjoining the Esplanade, it is the centre of political life in Calcutta. Rallies, demonstrations and agitations of all sorts - of which Calcutta has more than its fair share - traditionally start here. |
